This Week at Book Riot

August 7, 2015 |

Written by: Kelly on August 7, 2015.

Over on Book Riot this week (…and last week, as I totally forgot to round them up):

  • For 3 On a YA Theme, I talked about rock stars and the rock star life in YA fiction, as well as YA books set in space. For some reason, despite my current obsession with Pluto, two of the three space books are about the moon.
  • I talked about a handful of books that help me reignite my creativity when I’m feeling like I’m in a lull.
Here’s a look at how the Some Girls Are book donation drive is going so far.  I’m…blown away. If you want to help get this book into the hands of the West Ashley High School students, here are all of the details.
I had to have my post office box mail forward to my home address, too, since making the trip every day to carry home boxes and envelopes was getting tricky. That’s a pretty great thing.
Thanks to everyone who generously reached out to help. We’re doing right by these kids, and they’re going to know they have people who care deeply about them in their very own community.

This Week at Book Riot

July 24, 2015 |

Written by: Kelly on July 24, 2015.

Here’s a look at the two pieces I wrote for this week at Book Riot:

  • Kimberly linked earlier this week to my 3rd quarter preview of YA fiction and I’m going to go ahead and link it again. Your reading list will be getting much, much larger.
  • This week, I talked about 3 recent(ish) YA books published by indie presses. I am not a big fantasy reader, but after seeing some really great reviews of Archivist Wasp, I grabbed it from the library.
Over at School Library Journal, Shelley Diaz wrote a really great piece about the Size Acceptance in YA project that I’m a part of. I’m really proud of this project and honored to be part of it with three really smart librarians.

Over at Book Riot this week…

  • In honor of LGBT Pride month, here’s a look at 7 YA books featuring bisexual characters
  • I talked about four trends I noticed at this year’s Book Expo America

This Week at Book Riot

May 8, 2015 |

Written by: Kelly on May 8, 2015.

Over at Book Riot this week…..I was on a bit of a writing spree:

  • I talked about the problem with “free” ebooks for poor kids, the new government initiative with publishing. It’s not about the books; it’s about access.
  • I took over the “Literary Tourism” series over the weekend, with tons of bookish places to stop and visit if you’re in the great state of Iowa.
  • Three on a YA theme covers characters who are blind, as well as realistic takes on fairy tales.
  • I found a pile of fun, useful, and off-the-wall (…and on-the-wall) ampersand fetish.
  • After an email conversation where I noted I didn’t know where a book was because it could be in my car or a bag or donated….I had to do a “Shit Book Nerds Do” post with contributions from fellow Book Rioters.

April 24, 2015 |

Written by: Kelly on April 24, 2015.

Over at Book Riot this week:

  • I had the immense privilege of having a conversation with Laurie Halse Anderson and Courtney Summers about sexual violence, feminism, and the power of girls’ stories. This interview is one I am so proud of and am honored to have been able to do.
  • For 3 on a YA theme, a short round-up of verse novels.

This Week at Book Riot

March 6, 2015 |

Written by: Kelly on March 6, 2015.

I don’t think I mentioned it here, but I’m now working full-time for Book Riot. I had been there part-time, and this week, I made the transition to going full-time. I haven’t worked a single full-time job since 2011 — I’ve been doing the freelance thing alongside part-time work and other side gigs — so the change over has been interesting. This shouldn’t impact anything here at Stacked, since there’s always plenty to write about, but it has shifted my schedule and energy a bit, so I’m working on readjusting and acclimating to a new routine.

Here’s a look at what I wrote over on Book Riot this week…

  • 13 More Great Bookish Prints for Your Wall. I put together a round-up of bookish prints last month, and then I found more I thought were worth sharing. I’m really into the ampersand.

  • This week’s 3 On A YA Theme was all about mythological retellings. All three I highlighted are written by women of color.
In the monthly Riot Round-up, where everyone can talk about their favorite read from the month, I talked about Elana K. Arnold’s fantastic Infandous. This is a little tiny book but it packs a punch. Elana will be here later this month with a knock-out guest post, too.

This Week at Book Riot

February 6, 2015 |

Written by: Kelly on February 6, 2015.

So this is actually two weeks of work at Book Riot, since I was out of town last week.

  • The big, exciting news is that the YA Quarterly Box is now open for subscriptions! $50 gets you a box each quarter, filled with YA Books, as well as awesome bookish goodies. Here are the details, as well as how to sign up.  I am so excited to be curating this!
  • Last week’s 3 On A YA Theme was all about YA books where tattoos play a role in the story.
  • For this week’s 3 On A YA Theme, I talked about 3 YA books hitting the big screen very soon. Did you know Patricia McCormick’s Sold was being made into a movie? Me either.

January 9, 2015 |

Written by: Kelly on January 9, 2015.

This week over at Book Riot, I wrote a few things:

  • Here’s the big, huge, not-little-at-all preview of YA books coming out between January and March. I’m doing these round-ups quarterly, so I can have more depth and variety.
  • This week’s “3 On A YA Theme” covers 3 non-fiction titles and 3 fiction titles featuring trans* teen experiences and lives.
  • I wrote about the best of bookish Portlandia, one of my favorite shows, featuring one of my favorite leading ladies, Carrie Brownstein.
Also on Book Riot, I talked about my favorite book of December in our monthly Roit Round-up, which was Melanie Crowder’s Audacity:
And finally, the Book Riot Podcast announced that there will be a Quarterly YA Box, with subscriptions opening in February and first boxes shipping in April. More info soon, but I’m getting to curate it and I am very excited.

Over at Book Riot this week . . .
  • 3 On A YA Theme features three books that are set in Africa.
  • I rounded-up tons and tons of fun bookish socks, if you’re looking for some stocking stuffers or something fun to wear on your own feet.

October 3, 2014 |

Written by: Kelly on October 3, 2014.

Here’s a look at this week over at Book Riot…

  • I covered the monthly “5 Books to Watch For” post and highlighted a little bit of everything: some YA, some non-fiction, and some literary fiction.
  • For this week’s 3 On A YA Theme, three YA books that pay homage to Sylvia Plath.

September 5, 2014 |

Written by: Kelly on September 5, 2014.

Over at Book Riot this week…

  • Take a literary tour of the Great Plains states. This was a lot of fun to write. Also, I’d hoped to find more to do in North Dakota that was literary, but there really isn’t much. Despite the lack of places to visit, it’s impressive how much literary culture there is anyway.
  • Last week’s 3 on a YA theme was about YA books made into films you could watch instantly on Netflix. Since I found more than 3 solid choices, I decided to do a second round of 3 YA films you can watch right now on Netflix this week. Except my idea of 3 is more like 4.

This Week at Book Riot

August 1, 2014 |

Written by: Kelly on August 1, 2014.
Here’s a look at what I wrote this week over at Book Riot:
  • I rounded up three recent film trailers for YA adaptations, including The Maze Runner, Mockingjay, and If I Stay.

  • For 3 on a YA Theme I talked about an interesting trend of nail polish lines being created around YA dystopians that have (or are) hitting the big screen. The comments gave some insight into the nail polish side of it, too, though less insight into the why dystopian YA specifically.
  • I also shared my favorite book of July in the big monthly round-up.
