I’m trying something new, different, and totally terrifying today. I don’t know if I’ll ever do it again, but, I wanted to give making a book talk video a spin. This is a look at me (me!) talking about my current reads and some books hitting the top of my to-be-read pile.
This video is unedited, unscripted, and 100% raw Kelly talking about books. Think stream-of-consciousness but video style.
(deep breath)
Welcome to my face and my voice after only ever reading me on a screen. I’ll link to the books below on Goodreads if you’re interested in adding to your own TBR/want a compelling reason to listen to me yammer.
My Life On The Road by Gloria Steinem
Paper Girls #2 and Paper Girls #3 by Brian K. Vaughan (I know, male author!)
Paper Girls: Volume 1 (the trade edition)
The Memory of Light by Francisco X. Stork
Gena/Finn by Hannah Moskowitz and Kat Helgeson
A Tyranny of Petticoats edited by Jessica Spotswood
Burning by Danielle Rollins

I didn’t actually watch the whole video. I really am not a big fan of videos, just dont’ have the time to sit and watch them. But I had to watch a little, because I saw A Tyranny of Petticoats, something I’m dying to read! You’re braver than I am I hate the way I look in videos and hate my voice, so don’t plan to ever do a a video post if I can hep it. 🙂

Lisa, I’m the same way — I have a hard time watching them, which is why I never wanted to make one (I think you have to enjoy a thing before you try it on some levels). It was fun, but a LOT of work and mad props to people who do do it. I’m not sure I will again.
As for Petticoats, I’m a few stories in and it is SO GOOD. If it’s on your radar, you’re going to love it when you get it.

I’m on the fence about videos. I like how it’s a single place to get a nice round-up, but I think it depends a lot on the individual in the videos and whether I find them entertaining. I agree that it’s something you have to enjoy watching and really want to do.
As far as a first video goes, though, you pull it off well. Considering that you didn’t do any editing, it’s remarkably coherent and free of rambling! I think if I tried to do a video it would be about half an hour (with lots of tangents) and I’d have to spend at least twice that time editing it down until it made sense. 😀
I’m teaching Lullabies for Little Criminals to a Grade 12 class of adult learners right now, so I’m re-reading that. And then I’m going to read Remix, by Non Pratt. I loved her debut novel, Trouble, and am looking forward to this one. I’m also hoping to read Asking For It, by Louise O’Neill soon; it’s the January read for an online book club—but its not out in Canada yet so I’m having it shipped from the uK!
Kelly says
It’s definitely an art some people have; I don’t think it’s my medium! But you have to try something to know, right?
I read Asking for It and it’s REALLY good — can you get it shipped from book depository? That’s where I got it. Takes a little longer to ship, but it is free shipping at least.
I liked Lullabies when I read it a while back…and I keep meaning to read Trouble but haven’t yet!

Yep, book depository is where I ordered it from—just taking forever! So I’m sad I’ve missed out on some good book club discussion. I got an email from Canada Post saying something with COD is in transit and should be here tomorrow (so … Friday?) and am crossing my fingers that it’s Asking For It!
