Over at YALSA’s The Hub, I blogged about a new and interesting trend in YA fiction — releasing sequels to books years after the initial title was published. Check out some of the books falling into this trend. I’d love to hear your thoughts on why this is going on and I’d love if you can think of any others that might fit in the trend, too.
I’ll be blogging over at The Hub again tomorrow with the monthly debut novels, too.

Wait…Son is the sequel to The Giver? REALLY? Gosh, I had no idea it was the sequel! I read that book years ago! I think the main reason why this seems to be happening is simply because authors are realizing how popular their books were and are coming to the conclusion that they can make more money with a sequel. I haven't heard of most of the books on that list, but I do know that in terms of UnWholly, the reviews have been mixed. Some people liked it more than Unwind and others not-so-much, so it almost seems forced. Yet, I do understand that authors may return to a series later, but it seems unlikely to me. I've heard many authors say that after writing another novel, it's hard for them to go back into the mindset of their previous characters and I find it tough to fathom too. It's great for people who are just discovering these previous stand-alones, but for others like us, it's a rather irritating trend. I don't intend on going back to re-read all those books just for the sake of reading the sequels. *sigh* Anyway, I hope in a few years the current YA Stand Alones won't have sequels as well! *fingers crossed* Awesome post, Kelly! 🙂

What about prequels? I see this like an up coming trend. That and this new 1.5 or 2.5 book numbering. As if the book is not fully number 2 yet…
I haven't read any of these half books yet 🙂 but I wonder, do they just publish half and then the rest of the story will come out in book 2 or 3?
