Covers change the story, part 2

September 22, 2010 |

Written by: Kelly on September 22, 2010.

I’m a fan of Simone Elkeles’s Perfect Chemistry and Leaving Paradise series. They’re edgy, raw, and at times, downright sexy. But those aren’t her only books. She’s also put out another series which I haven’t yet read. But judging by these covers, it looks like a sweeter series than her others (sweeter as in, it’s probably appropriate for a bit younger readership than her other two books). Check out the covers:

They’re simple, clean, and they stand out on a shelf pretty easily. Imagine my shock when I went to a bookstore this week and saw what I thought was a new book by Elkeles (and then was surprised in myself for not knowing there was a new one):

I picked it up and read it. It’s not a new book: it’s a compilation of the other three books in one volume.

Now is it me, or does that cover not only look like every other book on the market, but it changes the entire tone of the story. Rather than looking like a sweeter read, it looks like her other two series. . . and like a bodice-ripping romance.

I hate the makeover. What about you?

Wow, I definitely prefer the first covers. The new one looks like a completely different book, and not in a good way. I hate it when they redo covers like that.

I like the first covers-they look fun and cute. These covers are trying to attract the Perfect Chemistry audience. I like the cover in general, just not for these books.

I actually prefer the new cover. I wouldn't pick up the first books because of their covers, expecting them to be for younger readers. Although that's not to say I LIKE the newer cover. It definitely doesn't stand out among the other similar covers. But of the two, I like the second better. I'd rather see a happy medium something that's not quite so cutesy but also not quite so sensual. Just my .02!

That's quite the makeover. While I don't hate it by any means, it seems kind of misleading to me.

I like the original covers, but Simone herself has admitted she's not a fan of the white covers, especially the one with the dog.
