A Memoir, a Novel, and a Graphic Novel

Triumph by Carolyn Jessop
My interest in religious cults continues, apparently. This is Carolyn Jessop’s continuation of the story she began in Escape. It focuses largely on her involvement with the raid on the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Texas in 2008. While the children taken in the raid were eventually all returned to their families (which Jessop believes was the wrong move to make), the raid did result in several prosecutions and convictions of FLDS men for allowing underage marriages to occur. Jessop testified at some of these trials/hearings and talks a lot about how trying it was for her and her family, but that she also found courage and power in it. The second part of the book goes into how she found the strength to succeed as a single mother with eight children in a world that didn’t understand her (and vice versa). She writes about what she learned from her grandmothers and how she leaned on the welfare system as well as how she drew from her own well of strength and believes others can learn from her example. She prefaces this by stating that at her speaking engagements, many people asked her about these things and she thought it was worth exploring. I agree, but the number of Goodreads reviewers who lambast her for being full of herself or “inserting too many of her own opinions” are alarming. She believes she is strong and extraordinary, and she is. It reminds me a lot of that social experiment that went around the internet a few weeks ago where women accept compliments and then get hate for it. People tell Carolyn Jessop she is extraordinary but then expect her to declaim it. I’m glad she doesn’t.

Beastkeeper by Cat Hellisen
I read Hellisen’s YA book, When the Sea is Rising Red, a few years ago and was impressed by the lovely writing but let down by the story. The blurb for her middle grade, Beastkeeper, was intriguing and the book was short enough that I felt like I wouldn’t be wasting too much of my time if I ended up not enjoying it. It’s about a girl, Sarah, whose mother leaves her one day, and whose father slowly starts turning into a beast. He leaves her at her grandmother’s house and she learns of a curse going back two generations in her family that causes a person to turn into a beast when they fall in love – or something like that. The mythology is interesting but it just never really came together. I’m still a little puzzled by it. Moreover, the characters always felt like they existed at a remove from the reader, something that may just be characteristic of Hellisen’s writing, as I felt this way about her other book as well. Promising, but ultimately just OK.

Dragons Beware by Jorge Aguirre and Rafael Rosado
The first book in this graphic novel series for kids, Giants Beware, was a favorite of mine in 2012, and I was part of the judging panel that chose it as a Cybils winner that year. Dragons Beware brings back all of the delightful characters – fierce fighter Claudette, her little brother Gaston who has a fondness for baking (but has resolved to give it up until he too can learn to fight), and her friend princess Marie. This time, they take on the dragon that maimed her father in order to reclaim his sword. This book chronicles yet another funny, exciting adventure with full-color, expressive artwork. The characters genuinely care about each other, they’re all brave in their own way, and Aguirre and Rosado clearly respect their individual strengths. While Claudette is a tomboy, the book handily dismisses the notion that a girl who want to be a princess and loves frilly dresses (Marie) can’t also fight and be brave and save her friends. And Gaston is precious as ever as he learns to accept his own uniqueness rather than trying to emulate others. Another home run.

Booklist: Synesthesia in Middle Grade and YA

Synesthesia is one of those interesting phenomena that crops up every now and again in fiction for kids and teens. In medical terms, synesthesia is “a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color.” It’s the word for when someone says they can feel sounds or taste colors. The most common form is colored hearing: perceiving sounds as colors.

The first encounter I had with it was in R. J. Anderson’s Ultraviolet, which I read a few years ago. I was fascinated by it. I think it’s a difficult condition to understand for those of us who don’t have it, since it deals with the way we perceive the world around us. According to this article from the American Psychological Association, most people who have synesthesia wouldn’t choose to give it up, even though it may cause them some strife. I expect it’s equally strange for synesthetes to consider perceiving the world like I do as it is for me to consider perceiving the world as they do.

For many kids and teens, the path to understanding lies in fiction, so here are a few middle grade and YA titles featuring people with synesthesia. Descriptions are from Worldcat and links go to Goodreads. Do you know of any others? Let me know in the comments.

Princess Decompsia and Count Spatula by Andi Watson + A Special Bonus Comic!

I never quite realized how much I enjoy a graphic novel where food plays a central part in the story.

Or maybe I did — I love Sara Varon’s Bake Sale and Lucy Knisley’s Relish and I dug Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Seconds — and I never quite put all of the pieces together that stories revolving around food or cooking done in a visual format tick all of my boxes.

Although Andi Watson’s latest Princess Decomposia and Count Spatula won’t go down on my all-time favorites list, this is a weirdly charming and enjoyable read, perfect for middle grade readers through adults. “Weirdly charming” is a compliment, not a criticism.

Princess Decomposia is a busy and overworked princess of the underworld. She’s constantly being called on to take care of tasks, as her father, the king, is weak and ill. He’s not just weak and ill; he’s also particular and picky. When he decides it’s time to fire the chef, he puts it upon Princess Decomposia to hire a replacement. And, of course, this replacement has to be good. Or at least, the replacement has to be good enough to make Qwik Soup, which is the meals served to the king each day. He’s a health nut, following the latest fads, but he doesn’t seem to eat anything except that soup.

That is clue number one something is strange about this guy.

After a round of interviews and taste tests, Princess Decomposia hires Count Spatula to be the kingdom’s chef. He’s well versed in all manner of cooking, though he has a fondness and particular strength for baking sweets. That makes perfect sense for a vampire, of course. Where he hopes he showcase his talents, he’s met with resistance from Clove, one of the assistants; she tells him regularly that he doesn’t need to be doing more than making soup since the king doesn’t want anything more than that. Count Spatula doesn’t listen, though, and instead, he continues to tinker with ideas in the kitchen. He’s even brought out his special baking talents at important dinners.

This isn’t a story about his cooking, though. This is instead a story about the relationship that develops between Count Spatula and Princess Decomposia. She’s extremely overworked and over-pressured, and as he watches her stress out and take on more than her fair share, Count Spatula begins to wonder why she’s working so hard. What’s in it for her? More, as he watches the closeness of Clove and her family — depicted in extremely sweet images — Count begins to pry into Princess Decomposia’s life. Is she happy? Why does she feel like she has to take on all of this work, especially as her father isn’t keeping a close eye on her? As the princess and count grow closer, she begins to see the value in taking time for herself and exploring the passions she has.

In fact, she may even try to do something on her very own for herself and no one else. Perhaps she’ll even do a little delegation of responsibility.

It’s not going to be that easy though, and that’s because the king isn’t as sick as he’s making himself out to be. When he gets a whiff of what his daughter is talking about with Count Spatula and when he begins to suspect that things aren’t being done according to his orders, suddenly, there’s a very different king around. One who isn’t sick. One who wants to bring his daughter back under his total and complete control.

Princess Decomposia and Count Spatula does contain romance, and it’s done in a sweet way. I did stop and pause for a moment at the end of the book, wondering what the ages of these characters were, despite the fact they’re not rendered as humans. Decomposia feels very young, while Count Spatula feels much older — he is a chef, after all. But in the end, this budding romance didn’t run into any ick factors at all and since this is a graphic novel perfectly appropriate for younger readers, it’ll feel like a nice payoff, rather than a plot element shoe horned in to give the book more strength. There’s enough relationship development as is, and the romance itself doesn’t become apparent for a long time. Instead, it’s a sweet connection that circles the themes of growing up and understanding what independence and choice really are. There’s also a thought-provoking and rarely-explored look at the importance of not taking on too much work and using delegation skills to manage your time and energy. I can’t name a graphic novel that’s done that before nor done it in a way that doesn’t feel over-the-top or overwhelming. It’s not didactic at all. Parents don’t always know best, and Watson scratches at that topic while offering a why — however good it is — behind the king’s behavior and actions.

It’s the descriptions and depictions of food in this graphic novel that were the most enjoyable for me. The sweets are rendered as things bigger than what they are — the mud cake is depicted as a Mud Monster Cake, and Princess and her dinner guests have to “attack” it to enjoy. These creations are fun and silly, which enhances the story’s charm. The storytelling outshines the illustrations for me in this book, except in the food department. That’s where Watson’s creativity shines, with the story and the illustrations marrying together nicely.

Pass along Princess Decomposia and Count Spatula to readers who like off-beat stories, brimming with fun, eccentric characters. This is a very British comic, so be prepared to encounter some less-familiar food and language choices. Readers who have been charmed by Sara Varon’s work in the past will find this to be a good next read.

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

Josh Bell, aka Filthy McNasty, is a solid basketball player. His brother, Jordan, isn’t too bad himself. The twin boys, both middle schoolers, have been playing for a long time. Their dad wasn’t too bad a ball player himself back in the day either — in fact, he played professionally and earned some good money and good jewelry. But he quit playing, and when Josh tries to broach the question about why his dad stopped and why his dad doesn’t take up coaching, dad dodges the questions.

On the surface, Kwame Alexander’s verse novel The Crossover looks simple. It’s about a boy and his brother who play basketball. But it’s a much deeper, more complex novel about the challenges that exceptionally “average” characters can have. Josh is a relatable character, with two parents who are happily married. He and his brother get along. They’re passionate about the game.

But things become more complex.

Josh and Jordan make a bet with one another relating to the game, and when Josh loses the bet, his brother has earned the privilege of cutting off one of his beloved locks. A misstep, though, leaves Josh with more than one lock cut, and the resulting look is something his mother isn’t too happy with. She tells him that he’ll have to cut them all off. He’s not thrilled about it, but he goes along with it, and when he’s sent to look for a box in which he can put those cut locks, he stumbles upon a box containing not just one of his father’s precious rings from his time as a ball player, but he uncovers why his father quit the game. This revelation about his father opens up a whole new world to Josh and Jordan about their father and his deep-seeded fears.

As the season progresses, Jordan becomes enamored with a new girl at school. She reciprocates, and the two of them become boyfriend and girlfriend (in the way that middle schoolers are boyfriend and girlfriend — there’s no physical action and nothing happens on page here at all if there is). When this relationship begins to bud, suddenly Josh feels left out. His best friend and twin brother has entered into a new phase of life and a new experience that Josh hasn’t. They spend less time together as a team and more time apart. It’s a huge change for Josh, and at times, it comes across as jealousy and at other times, it comes across as grieving how his relationship with his brother once was.

There’s more though. The little secret about their father’s future in basketball was just the tip of what Josh discovers. As he’s spending more time alone, he’s been keeping an eye on his parents and learns that his dad hasn’t been feeling well. In one instance, he fainted after not feeling well. While his mother keeps telling his dad to see a doctor, since his other father died young of heart disease, his father won’t listen.

He’s afraid of doctors.

Between explosive scenes on the court, rendered visually in the text, are the moments of quiet sadness and fear that linger in Josh’s mind about his dad and the condition his dad may or may not be in. Spoiler: it’s not good condition, and when the basketball season comes to its final game, one that’s tense and important, Josh’s dad’s heart doesn’t stay strong enough for him to witness it. The last few pages of this book are tough to read.

The Crossover makes exceptionally smart use of the verse format, without once feeling overdone or leaving the reader with the feeling a lot was lost because of the style. Alexander plays with the format visually in tense action scenes, and Josh’s voice comes through. He loves rap and he plays around with rap himself, so the poetry and the beat of this story are authentic, natural, and memorable. This is the kind of story you’d read out loud because it lends itself to that. The speed and intensity of the game pair with the rhythm of the text.

The little details of this book stand out because of the format, and those little details tell us so much about Josh and the rest of his family. His mom is the assistant principal at his school, and he feels more pressure for himself and on the court because of that. Of course, dad’s former role as a player doesn’t help that. Both mom and dad are supportive in his and his brother’s lives and in their passion for the game. Josh is also an average student, and even when things start getting tough for him, what’s sacrificed is his behavior, not his intellect or his capacity to do well. Those behavioral changes are done in a way that make you want to hug him and tell him it’s going to be all right. He’s a great kid, with a great head on his shoulders, and passions that are worth pursuing.

Being that this book is about 7th graders, this “it’s going to be all right” sentiment is important because it taps into what so many middle schoolers feel at that age. It’s a rough transition period for even the most “average” kid. People are growing and changing in ways that do and don’t make sense. What seems like a natural thing — Josh’s brother getting a girlfriend — is something much more than that. It’s a crisis of Josh’s identity since he’s no longer half of the Josh and Jordan pair. He’s an entirely independent being, and being jolted into that awareness is tough because it’s new.

Alexander’s book falls into a weird area, though. This book is perfectly appropriate for middle grade readers, and it’s also going to have appeal for both young YA readers and more reluctant YA readers. The challenge on that end, though, is that teens who read YA will likely be less willing to read about 7th graders than middle grade readers would be. I suspect The Crossover may fall between the cracks because of this, and I sure hope it doesn’t. Alexander’s book is about this “crossover” period, and it’s going to speak deeply to teens (especially boys and especially black boys who don’t see enough of themselves in realistic fiction) who are in that “crossover” period themselves. This is a book you sell to readers based on their maturity and interest, rather than on the grade or reading level they’re at. The Crossover will make a great bridge to books like Matthew Quick’s Boy21, too, both because of the content and the well-drawn, dynamic, and memorable characters.

You know exactly the kid who needs this book, who will fall in love with this book, and most important, who will see himself in this book. There is a gut punch at the end, but it’s not a story without hope to it.

Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

I’ve found that I prefer my nonfiction in unconventional mediums – via audio, in short snippets on the web, or in graphic novel format. This past weekend, I dug into two stellar graphic memoirs, both of which tackled growing up as a girl in America: Sisters by Raina Telgemeier and Tomboy by Liz Prince. I planned to review both in this post, but because I love you, dear readers, I’ve split them into two posts (I got a little wordy, as often happens). Come back tomorrow for a discussion of Tomboy.

Sisters is a companion book to Smile and tells the story of a summer road trip taken by Raina, her little sister Amara, her little brother Will, and her mother. They drove from California to Colorado to visit aunts, uncles, and cousins when Raina was around 14. Interspersed among the events of the road trip are musings on Raina’s initial desire to have a little sister – and the reasons Raina felt this was a terrible mistake once it actually happened.

The book focuses mainly on Raina’s relationship with Amara, covering the road trip in a linear way and flashing back to various other moments in time: Amara’s birth, Amara as a toddler, Will’s birth, and so on. Every girl’s relationship with her sister is different, but they almost all share that lovely combination of love and intense dislike. Sometimes your sister will be your best friend; sometimes she’ll be your arch enemy. If you’re lucky, by the time you’re both adults, you’re solidly on the friend track most of the time. When you’re both kids, though, it’s an uneven, rocky trail.

Telgemeier rounds out the story with a few other elements: Raina’s relationship with her cousins (not great), her parents’ relationship with each other, her father being laid off, her interest in comics, and so on. There’s a great scene between Raina and her older male cousins where Raina expresses her interest in drawing comics, naming some of her favorite strips (For Better or for Worse, Foxtrot), and her cousins laugh it off as “not real comics” (like Batman or Hulk, according to them). This is such a simple and realistic way to address sexism in comics and how difficult finding and advocating for your passion can be when you’re a kid. I’ve no doubt that a conversation much like this actually happened.

As a child who went on numerous summer road trips with a brother and a little sister to visit cousins who weren’t always so nice to me, this was instantly relatable. It’s also funny. I laughed out loud at the story Telgemeier tells of her little sister’s pet snake getting loose in the van and living for days without dying or being caught (Raina is, of course, terrified of snakes, and Amara uses this against her). I have stories like this from my own family’s road trips, too. One of my parents’ favorite stories of sibling bickering on road trips involves one kid telling a parent about another kid: “Mom, she’s looking out my window!” (Apparently, we felt that we not only had our own seats in the minivan, we also had our own specific windows.) It’s funny now, but I know we were dead serious then.

Telgemeier has a magical way of making the mundane seem extraordinary. Nothing that happens is fantastical or unusual, but it’s riveting anyway. It should speak quite strongly to big sisters who look on their little sisters with equal parts fondness and aggravation (and vice versa!), bringing to light that contradictory fact that you can love someone and hate her at the same time. There are insights about love and kindness, sure, but it’s not saccharine and she never hits the reader over the head with a Message.

Telgemeier traffics in nostalgia for adults my age – there are references to battery-run Walkmans and a conspicuous absence of the internet or cell phones – but doesn’t allow the book to wallow in it. This is still a book for kids who are kids right now – kids who are forced into close proximity with their siblings who they may not have a lot in common with for a long period of time, whether that’s on a road trip or sharing a bedroom or enforced “family game nights.” It’s about how you get along (or don’t) with the people life has thrown at you through no fault of your own. It’s a lovely middle grade memoir about family with Telgemeier’s trademark expressive, cartoon-style art, and it should find a wide audience.
