Recently at Book Riot

July 17, 2015 |

Even though we’ve been on a vacation here at STACKED, I’ve been writing quite a bit over at Book Riot. We’ll be back to our regular programming here on Monday, but in the mean time, you can catch up with everything over there:

  • In honor of Harper Lee day, I wrote about how and why To Kill A Mockingbird isn’t a “YA” book, with some grappling about what the definition of “YA” is at all.
  • How we can — and why we should — combat fat phobia in YA books. I talk quite a bit here, too, about graphic novels for teens that are depicting fat characters in great ways.
  • Two “3 On A YA Theme” posts: first love in YA and YA books with ice cream on the cover.

This Week at Book Riot and Elsewhere

June 13, 2015 |

Over at Book Riot this week, I had two posts — one that went up on Friday, which is why this post didn’t hit until today:

  • I rounded-up a ton of cat-centric adult fiction. This post is paw-sitively packed with puns.
  • For 3 On A YA Theme, I talked about pets in YA fiction. All three examples happen to be dogs and one is a book that’ll hit shelves this fall.
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of being part of a webinar for the Massachusetts Library System with Liz Burns and Sophie Brookover. We talked about New Adult fiction, defining what it is, how it’s grown, and some of the key titles. You can tune into the webinar and access our slides and reading guide right here for free.

This Week at Book Riot

This Week at Book Riot & Disability in Kid Lit

May 22, 2015 |

Over at Book Riot this week:

  • I talked about the Belmont Public Library for Birds, my current favorite Twitter feed in the world.
  • This week’s 3 On A YA Theme showcases three YA diverse speculative short story collections.

Over at Disability in Kid Lit, I shared my story about depression and why we need more depictions of how depression functions in YA lit. I’ve been completely overwhelmed by the response to this piece, both over there and privately. Thank you for everyone who read, shared, and reached out to me. I’ve tried to respond to every person, but if I missed anyone, it was totally accidental.

Please spend time reading through the entire Mental Illness series over there this week. It’s fantastic.
